Cranking Up Your Motivation & Getting Clarity Over Your Goals
Getting clarity on why you want to ditch Imposter Syndrome and what it has been / might still cost you is essential if it's a pattern you have run for years. There will be points in the process where you need to let go of habits you have become attached to and this will give you the motivation and determination to keep going.
Most people miss out on this step, so don't have the momentum behind the changes they want to make and give up too early.
Taming Your Inner Critic
You can't do deeper-level identity work until you know how to press 'pause' on your inner critic's drama stories - and the biochemical stress reactions they trigger in your body.
This goes beyond 'positive thinking' or affirmations, because they are like papering over the cracks with expensive wallpaper - the damp will show back through the following winter.
It's about simple, yet effective ways to learn how to choose which thoughts to feed.
Most people miss out this step, which can lead to what I call 'the Imposter Syndrome pantomime', where the voice in your head yo-yos between telling you that you can do something and then that you can't. This leads to an internal conflict that cranks up your stress levels and makes Imposter Syndrome worse.

This is where the realm of limiting beliefs hang out. By clearing out those that don't empower us any more, we can make a massive difference to our confidence and can even ease Imposter Syndrome.
This is where lots of mindset coaches work and it's the primary focus of therapies like CBT.
But unless you have first connected with your motivation in step one, it's easy to run from this and get mediocre results.
Also, unless you've learned how to tame your inner critic in step two, it's really hard not to have those beliefs rebuild themselves, because we haven't cleared the neural pathways in the brain that created them.

This is where the real magic happens. Once you know how to choose which thoughts to feed, rather than having polar opposites yelling at each other, and you've been clearing out your limiting beliefs, fears and hidden excuses, you can do the real freedom work.
In step four you start to take off the masks we so often wear, to start becoming more of who you really are. Once you've done steps one, two and three, this feels safer and can bring an incredible sense of relief.
And the secret at this level is dealing with what psychologists call 'secondary gain' - what our crazy behaviour does for us.
Unless you identify which hidden needs Imposter Syndrome was meeting for you and either release those needs or find a more healthy way to meet them, the mindset-level work won't stick.
